Official Top 50 Alternative playlist

Indie, alternative, shoegaze and nearby scenes from community charts

On ChartFM, Alternative is not a separate vote. It is a Top 50 built from main weekly charts after a tag filter that includes indie, alternative rock, shoegaze, post-punk, britpop, dream pop and several adjacent labels.

The official Spotify playlist is the listening mirror of that ranking. Same link every week; new tracks when the genre edition is published.

It lives on the official profile https://open.spotify.com/user/31cltms7ljqqkaktslykzmyvgxqu. Following the profile and sharing the playlist helps anyone tracking the community's alternative scene find the list without relying on search.

The filter that defines Alternative

Entry is not a human editorial call track by track. The catalogue carries tags (MusicBrainz / Last.fm and similar). If the track has tags, those apply. If not, the artist's tags apply. With no tag, the song does not enter.

The Top 50 Alternative accepted tag list was assembled by hand in the site code. It includes the indie-alt core and labels such as slowcore, riot grrrl, new wave, lo-fi and noise rock. The match is exact: a tag off the list does not enter, even if the track “feels” alternative.

That stops anyone from classifying their own chart at publish time. It also explains why a track you treat as indie can stay out: the catalogue tag is missing, or the tag that exists is not on this Top 50's list.

Border with Pop and Rock

Dream pop and bedroom pop can score in Alternative and in Pop. Alternative rock and some adjacent metal labels cross with Top 50 Rock. When the tag sits on both lists, the track scores in both charts with the same points.

For the playlist, that means possible overlap with other official lists the same week. Hearing Alternative is not hearing “what was left from Pop”; it is hearing the Alternative filter's result.

Why order matters

Playlist order is the genre page Top 50 order for the week. Position 1 on the genre page is the first track on the list, and so on, among those with a Spotify URI.

Climbs, falls, debuts and weeks on chart show on the genre page, not on Spotify. The playlist is for continuous listening; the site table is for reading movement.

How your chart feeds the list

If your main weekly chart includes tracks with alternative tags, those points already count toward this Top 50. There is no separate “Alternative chart” to publish.

Daily charts and secondary charts do not feed the global genre ranking. Only the main weekly one. Publishing regularly changes the Top 50 because it changes the community sum, not because the playlist has an algorithm of its own.

Spotify updates

When the weekly genre snapshot is saved, the official sync replaces the fixed playlist's tracks and updates the title with the week label. Anyone already following the list stays on the same address.

A Top 50 track without a Spotify link in the catalogue does not enter the playlist. That is a sync limit, not a ranking limit: the ChartFM page still shows the position.

Profile and sharing

Use https://open.spotify.com/user/31cltms7ljqqkaktslykzmyvgxqu as the starting point. The Top 50 Alternative playlist and the other official ones live there. Following the profile and sharing the list is the simplest way to spread the week's ranking without asking someone to create a ChartFM login just to listen.

Frequently asked questions

Does Alternative include metal?
Only when the track's tag sits on this Top 50's accepted list (for example certain alternative metal labels). Top 50 Rock is the main slice for rock and metal in general.
Can I force a song in by tagging my chart's genre?
No. The filter ignores your chart's genre setting and looks at the track or artist tag in the catalogue.
Can the playlist and the page diverge?
They can on the detail of tracks without a Spotify ID. The site ranking is the source; the playlist is the syncable subset.
Do community charts feed this Top 50?
No. The global genre Top 50 sums personal main charts from the site community, with the same criterion as the Global 100 filtered by tag.
How do I follow older weeks?
On /global/genre/alternative you browse the published history. The public Spotify playlist points to the latest synced edition.
